A Program for Environmental Education in Secondary Schools using the Internet in Japan--------The Object and Progress of the Environmental Learning and Investigation Network in Japan ( EILNet )

Makiko KANODA, Tadayasu TSUJI and Yoshihito UEZONO
Tokyo Gakugei University

1. The outline of EILNet.

In order to clarify the effect of the Internet as a communication resource for environmental awareness in educational programs in schools, the Field Studies Institute for Environmental Education (FSIFEE) of Tokyo Gakugei University has promoted the Environmental Learning and Investigation Network in Japan (EILNet). It has progressed in the 20 Japanese secondary schools (EILNet schools) since July of 1997, receiving financial support from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture as a test case for environmental education programs using the Internet. EILNet attempts to use the Internet as the resource for communication between schools, and publishes or presents the results and conclusions of the students after they investigate and learn about the environment.

2.The Activities of EILNet

Heat island phenomena

We must consider about how our activities of everyday life affect physical environment by measuring temperature of the air around us. The purpose of this section is studying environment of the earth starting with observing our local environment. Think about the physical environment with expanding from Japan through Asia, to the world.

Soundscape

In this program, students are asked to listen to sounds of their place, such as their house, their school, etc. carefully. Sounds make students recognize a change of environment, and rouse the feeling of seasons. Through this program, students will realize and consider the importance of sound environment.

Acid deposition

In this program, students examine acidity of a rain fall and observe erosion on the surface of marble to investigate what kind of influence have acid deposition on the environment. Students also compare data of acid deposition obtained from wide areas and understand the actual condition of the acid deposition.

River and water bodies

In this program, students observe and learn the environment related to water bodies from the viewpoint of science, geography and sociology. What is expected in this program is that the learning and observation result in the recognition of relation between water bodies and human life, and the conservation of river, lake and pond.

Food culture and life style

Food culture related to life style is a very important aspect of environmental education programs, because human food habits are closely linked to environment. A main aim of this project is comparative studies on the diversity of food cultures and life styles around the world.

Ecology of dandelions

In this program, students investigate distribution of dandelions (native species and of introduced species) and compare habitats of both species.

3.Future Plan of EILNet

With the activities on environmental investigations in local area near the schools, the students make homepages for the World Wide Web on the Internet in order to report the results of environmental investigations to many students, especially the students of EILNet schools carrying out same investigations. The students of the other EILNet schools have also published results and conclusions using the Internet. Half of the EILNet schools have published the results of investigations on homepages since December of 1997. In EILNet program, we are planning to start communications by message board and meeting on Internet(CUSeeMe) etc. Utilizing those communication methods, we want to make a "school - exchange" active. Then finally we aim to accomplish independent school network.
